What Hajj Actually Involves, Day by Day

Hajj is five days of intense spiritual and physical effort. Think of it as a spiritual marathon: you wouldn't run 42km without training and preparation, and you shouldn't attempt Hajj without knowing exactly what each day requires.

    DayDate (Dhul Hijjah)LocationKey Rituals
Day 18thMinaEnter Ihram, travel to Mina, pray Dhuhr through Fajr next day
Day 29thArafat → MuzdalifahTHE pillar of Hajj: stand at Arafat from Dhuhr to sunset, then travel to Muzdalifah for overnight
    Day 310th (Eid)Mina → Makkah → MinaStone Jamrat al-Aqabah, sacrifice animal, shave/trim hair, Tawaf al-Ifadah + Sa'i, return to Mina
Day 411thMinaStone all three Jamarat after Dhuhr
Day 512thMina → MakkahStone all three Jamarat, Tawaf al-Wada (farewell Tawaf) before leaving Makkah

Day 2 (Arafat) is non-negotiable. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafat" (Tirmidhi 889). If you're present at Arafat between Dhuhr on the 9th and Fajr on the 10th, even for a moment, your Hajj stands. Miss it entirely, and you must repeat Hajj the following year.

    Umrah Step-by-Step

Umrah is simpler than Hajj, four steps, typically completed in 2-4 hours:

    🕋 1. Ihram

Enter the sacred state at the Miqat. Men: two white unstitched cloths. Women: normal modest clothing. Make the intention: 'Labbayk Allahumma Umrah.' Recite the Talbiyah continuously.

    🔄 2. Tawaf

Seven anti-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba. Start from the Black Stone corner. Men: Idtiba (right shoulder exposed) during Tawaf. Raml (brisk walking) in first 3 circuits. Pray 2 raka'at behind Maqam Ibrahim after.

    🚶 3. Sa'i

Seven laps between Safa and Marwah hills (now inside the Haram complex). Start at Safa, end at Marwah. Men jog lightly between the green markers. The distance is about 3.2km total.

    ✂️ 4. Halq/Taqsir

Men: shave the head completely (halq, preferred) or trim hair evenly (taqsir). Women: cut a fingertip-length from the ends of their hair. You're now out of Ihram, all restrictions lifted.

    Physical Preparation Timeline

Hajj is physically demanding. Start preparing months in advance, not days:

    What's Prohibited in Ihram

Once you enter Ihram, these restrictions apply until you exit (after stoning and hair cutting on Day 3 of Hajj, or after Taqsir for Umrah):

    Scented products

No perfume, cologne, scented soap, scented shampoo, or scented deodorant. This is why the checklist specifies unscented toiletries.

    Cutting hair or nails

Not a single hair or nail can be deliberately cut. Accidental hair loss (while washing) doesn't count.

    Stitched clothing (men)

Men wear two unstitched cloths. No shirts, trousers, underwear with seams, or socks. Sandals must not cover the ankle bone.

    Covering the head (men)

No hats, caps, hoods, or wrapping the Ihram cloth over the head. Umbrellas are permitted, they're held above, not on, the head.

    Hunting or harming animals

Even insects should not be deliberately killed while in Ihram.

    Sexual relations

Completely prohibited during Ihram. This is the most serious prohibition, violating it invalidates the Hajj.

Penalty for violations: most unintentional violations require a fidyah (feeding 6 poor people, fasting 3 days, or sacrificing a sheep). Intentional sexual relations require a new Hajj the following year. Consult a scholar for your specific situation.

    Common Mistakes First-Time Pilgrims Make

    Packing too much

You'll carry your bag at Mina for 3 days. Pack light, you can buy anything you forget in Makkah or Madinah. The shops around the Haram sell everything.

Not breaking in shoes before the trip

This causes more suffering than almost anything else. Walk 10km in your Hajj shoes at least 3 times before departure.

    Forgetting unscented toiletries

Regular soap and deodorant contain fragrance. Buy unscented versions weeks before departure and pack them. Scented products in Ihram require a fidyah.

    Not carrying enough water

Dehydration in 45°C heat is dangerous. Carry a refillable bottle. Drink before you feel thirsty. Zamzam water stations are available but queues can be long.

    Skipping travel insurance

Medical evacuation from Saudi Arabia costs £20,000-50,000+ without insurance. A Hajj-specific policy costs £30-100. Not having it is reckless, not frugal.

    Not learning the rituals beforehand

You should know the steps of Hajj/Umrah before you arrive, not learn them on the day. Attend your operator's pre-departure seminars and bring a printed step-by-step guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?
Hajj is the annual pilgrimage performed during Dhul Hijjah (8th-13th) and is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for those who can afford it physically and financially. Umrah is a 'minor pilgrimage' that can be performed at any time of year. Hajj includes standing at Arafat (the pillar of Hajj) and rituals at Mina and Muzdalifah; Umrah consists of Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and shaving/cutting hair.
    When is Hajj 2026?
Hajj 2026 is expected to fall approximately 2-7 June 2026 (8-13 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH). Exact dates depend on moon sighting. The Day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah) is the most important day. Always confirm with your Hajj operator for final dates.
How much does Hajj cost from the UK?
Hajj packages from the UK typically range from £5,000 to £12,000+ per person in 2026, depending on accommodation quality, proximity to the Haram, and package inclusions. Budget packages start around £4,500-5,500; mid-range £6,000-8,000; premium £9,000-12,000+. From the US, packages range $7,000-15,000+. Always use ATOL-protected operators (UK) or licensed agents.
    How much does Umrah cost?
Umrah packages from the UK range from £800 to £3,000+ depending on timing (Ramadan is most expensive), accommodation, and duration. Off-peak (outside Ramadan and school holidays) is significantly cheaper. From the US, expect $1,500-4,000+. Many Muslims combine Umrah with a family holiday.
What are the pillars (arkan) of Hajj?
The four pillars without which Hajj is invalid: 1) Ihram, entering the sacred state with intention, 2) Standing at Arafat (Wuquf) on 9th Dhul Hijjah, 3) Tawaf al-Ifadah, circumambulation of the Kaaba after Arafat, 4) Sa'i, walking between Safa and Marwah. Missing any pillar means the Hajj must be repeated.
What are the pillars of Umrah?
Umrah has four pillars: 1) Ihram, entering the sacred state at the Miqat, 2) Tawaf, seven circuits around the Kaaba, 3) Sa'i, seven laps between Safa and Marwah, 4) Halq or Taqsir, shaving or trimming the hair. These must be performed in order.
    What is Ihram?
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before crossing the Miqat (boundary point). For men, it involves wearing two unstitched white cloths (one wrapped around the waist, one over the shoulder). Women wear their normal modest clothing, there is no specific colour requirement. In the state of Ihram, certain actions are prohibited: cutting hair/nails, using scented products, covering the head (men), wearing gloves/face covering (women, debated), hunting, and sexual relations.
What should I pack for Hajj or Umrah?
Essential items: Ihram garments (2 sets for men), comfortable walking shoes/sandals, unscented soap and toiletries, prescription medications with doctor's letter, money belt, portable prayer mat, sunscreen (unscented), electrolyte sachets, a small backpack for Mina, copies of passport and visa, and a phone charger. Our checklist above covers 60+ items across all categories.
Do I need vaccinations for Hajj?
Saudi Arabia requires the meningococcal ACWY vaccine (within 5 years). Seasonal flu and COVID vaccines are strongly recommended. The UK's NHS travel health service recommends updating routine vaccinations (MMR, tetanus, polio). From the US, the CDC recommends the same plus hepatitis A/B. Carry your vaccination certificate, it's checked at entry.
Can women go for Hajj or Umrah without a mahram?
Traditionally, a mahram (male relative) was required. Saudi Arabia changed the rules in 2021: women aged 45+ can now travel for Hajj with an organised group without a mahram. For Umrah, women of any age can travel without a mahram. Individual scholar and country-specific rulings vary, check with your local Islamic authority and Hajj operator.
What happens if I miss the standing at Arafat?
Standing at Arafat (Wuquf) is THE pillar of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Hajj is Arafat' (Tirmidhi 889). If you miss being present at Arafat between Dhuhr on 9th Dhul Hijjah and Fajr on 10th Dhul Hijjah, your Hajj is invalid and must be repeated the following year. This is why Hajj operators are extremely careful about transport logistics on the Day of Arafat.
How fit do I need to be for Hajj?
Hajj involves significant walking, estimates range from 10-20km per day during the main days. You'll walk in extreme heat (40-50°C in summer), stand for hours at Arafat, and navigate massive crowds. Start a walking programme 3-6 months before departure. If you have mobility issues, wheelchair services are available but must be arranged in advance.
