    Prayer Time Calculator

Accurate Islamic prayer times for any location. Supports 10 calculation methods, Hanafi/Shafi'i Asr, and high-latitude rules, powered by the adhan library.

Free to use. Runs in your browser.

Muslims pray five times daily: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). Times depend on your location and calculation method (MWL, ISNA, Egyptian, Umm al-Qura).

Hanafi Asr starts when shadow = 2x object height. Standard starts at 1x. Hanafi is typically 30-75 minutes later.

    How Prayer Times Are Calculated

Islamic prayer times aren't arbitrary, they're derived from the position of the Sun. Each prayer corresponds to a specific solar event: Fajr starts at dawn, Dhuhr at solar noon, Asr in the afternoon when shadows lengthen, Maghrib at sunset, and Isha at nightfall. The exact moment depends on your geographic coordinates, the time of year, and which calculation method you follow.

The calculation methods differ primarily in the angle of the Sun below the horizon used for Fajr (dawn) and Isha (nightfall). The Muslim World League uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, while ISNA uses 15° for both. A steeper angle means a later Fajr (closer to sunrise) and an earlier Isha (closer to sunset). The difference can be 15-30 minutes.

    The Five Daily Prayers

    Fajr (Dawn)

    2 Sunnah + 2 Fard

The pre-dawn prayer. Its time begins when the first light appears on the horizon (astronomical dawn at the configured angle) and ends at sunrise.

    Before sunrise

    Dhuhr (Midday)

    4 Sunnah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah

The midday prayer. Begins when the Sun passes its highest point and ends when the Asr time begins.

    After solar noon

    Asr (Afternoon)

    4 Fard

The afternoon prayer. In the Hanafi school, it begins when an object's shadow equals twice its height plus the noon shadow. Other schools use a factor of 1x.

    Mid-afternoon

    Maghrib (Sunset)

    3 Fard + 2 Sunnah

The sunset prayer. Begins the moment the Sun disappears below the horizon. Scholars recommend praying promptly.

    At sunset

    Isha (Night)

    4 Fard + 2 Sunnah + 3 Witr

The night prayer. Begins when the red twilight fades (at the configured angle below the horizon). Can be prayed until midnight or before Fajr.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How are prayer times calculated?
Prayer times are calculated from the position of the Sun relative to your location. Fajr begins when the Sun reaches a certain angle below the horizon before sunrise. Dhuhr is when the Sun passes the meridian. Asr is when shadows reach a specific length. Maghrib is at sunset. Isha begins when the Sun reaches a certain angle below the horizon after sunset.
What's the difference between calculation methods?
Different Islamic authorities use slightly different angles for Fajr and Isha. For example, the Muslim World League (MWL) uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, while ISNA uses 15° for both. This means Fajr and Isha times can differ by 15-30 minutes depending on which method you follow. Choose the method your local mosque uses.
What is the Hanafi Asr difference?
The Hanafi school calculates Asr as when an object's shadow equals twice its height plus the noon shadow. The other three schools (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) start Asr when the shadow equals the object's height plus noon shadow. In practice, Hanafi Asr is typically 30-75 minutes later, with a larger gap at higher latitudes.
Which calculation method should I use?
Use the method recommended by your local mosque or Islamic authority. Common choices: MWL for Europe and the Far East, ISNA for North America, Egyptian for Africa, Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia, Karachi for South Asia, Turkey/Diyanet for Turkey, and Moonsighting Committee for the UK. When in doubt, MWL is a safe default.
Why do prayer times change daily?
Because Earth's axis is tilted 23.5° relative to its orbit around the Sun. This tilt changes how long the Sun is above the horizon and how high it climbs. At UK latitudes (51-55°N), Fajr in June can be before 2:30 AM, while in December it's after 6:00 AM, a shift of over 3 hours.
What happens at very high latitudes?
Above roughly 48°N, the Sun may not dip far enough below the horizon in summer for Fajr or Isha angles to be reached. This tool handles this with the 'Twilight Angle' method, which estimates times based on the nearest day when the angle was reached. Some scholars recommend the 'Middle of the Night' or 'One-Seventh' methods instead.
Is Dhuhr the same as midday?
Almost. Dhuhr begins when the Sun crosses the local meridian (its highest point). In the UK, this isn't exactly 12:00 noon because of timezone offsets and the Equation of Time. Dhuhr in London is typically between 11:55 and 12:25, varying by season.
What is the Sunnah prayer before Fajr?
The two Sunnah rakats before the obligatory Fajr prayer are considered the most emphasised Sunnah prayer. They can be prayed from Fajr time onwards but before the obligatory prayer. This tool shows Fajr time, the Sunnah is prayed in the window between Fajr and the congregational prayer.
When does Maghrib start and end?
Maghrib begins immediately at sunset, when the Sun's upper edge disappears below the horizon. According to most scholars, the Maghrib window ends when the red twilight disappears (which is roughly Isha time). It's recommended to pray Maghrib promptly after the adhan.
    Is my location data stored?
No. Your coordinates are used only in your browser to calculate prayer times using the adhan library. No data is sent to any server. All calculations run entirely on your device.
