The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is lunar, 354 or 355 days per year, roughly 10-11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. Year 1 AH corresponds to 622 CE, the year of the Prophet's migration (Hijrah) to Medina.

Dates below use the Umm al-Qura algorithm, local moon sighting may differ by a day.

    Gregorian Date

    Understanding the Islamic Calendar

The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar, each month begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. Unlike the Gregorian (solar) calendar which tracks Earth's orbit around the Sun, the Islamic calendar tracks the Moon's orbit around Earth. This gives it a year of about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year.

That 11-day difference means Islamic dates "move" through the Gregorian calendar. Ramadan, for instance, falls about 11 days earlier each year, cycling through all seasons over approximately 33 years. A Muslim born in 1990 CE has experienced Ramadan in summer, autumn, winter, and spring, with the fasting hours varying dramatically between seasons.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is the Hijri calendar?
The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months totalling 354 or 355 days per year. It began with the migration (Hijra) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. It's used by Muslims worldwide to determine religious observances like Ramadan, Hajj, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.
Why is the Islamic year shorter than the Gregorian?
The Islamic calendar follows actual lunar cycles, each month begins with a new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. Twelve lunar months total about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the 365-day solar (Gregorian) year. This means Islamic dates shift earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, Ramadan, for example, moves through all four seasons over a 33-year cycle.
What algorithm does this converter use?
This converter uses the Kuwaiti algorithm (also known as the tabular Islamic calendar), a widely accepted arithmetic approximation. It's accurate for most practical purposes but dates may differ by 1-2 days from locally observed moon sighting. For religious observances, always verify with your local Islamic authority.
What are the 12 Hijri months?
The 12 months are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qi'dah, and Dhul Hijjah. Of these, Ramadan (the fasting month) and Dhul Hijjah (the Hajj month) are the most widely known.
When did the Hijri calendar start?
Year 1 AH (Anno Hegirae) corresponds to 622 CE, the year of the Prophet's migration from Makkah to Madinah. The calendar was formally established during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who chose the Hijra as the starting point for the Muslim era.
Why do Islamic dates sometimes differ between countries?
Many Muslim communities determine the start of each month by physical moon sighting (ru'yah) rather than astronomical calculation. Since the new moon may be visible in one location but not another, months can start on different days in different countries. Saudi Arabia, for instance, may announce Eid a day before or after the UK.
What is the current Hijri year?
In April 2026 CE, the approximate Hijri year is 1448 AH. Remember that because the Islamic year is about 11 days shorter, the Hijri year changes roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
Which months are sacred in Islam?
Four months are considered sacred (haram): Dhul Qi'dah (11th), Dhul Hijjah (12th), Muharram (1st), and Rajab (7th). Fighting was traditionally forbidden during these months. The Prophet (peace be upon him) confirmed their sacred status in his farewell sermon.
What important dates use the Hijri calendar?
Key dates include: 1 Ramadan (start of fasting), 27 Ramadan (Laylat al-Qadr, approximate), 1 Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr), 8-13 Dhul Hijjah (Hajj), 10 Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha), 1 Muharram (Islamic New Year), 10 Muharram (Ashura), and 12 Rabi al-Awwal (Mawlid al-Nabi).
    Is the calculation exact?
The tabular algorithm is accurate to within 1-2 days of the actual observed calendar. For religious purposes (starting/ending Ramadan, Eid prayers), always follow your local mosque or Islamic authority's announcement based on moon sighting or the Umm al-Qura calendar.
