Why PDF Pages End Up Sideways (And How Rotation Fixes It)

PDF rotation is one of those things you never think about until you need it. Then it's incredibly frustrating. A scanned document comes out sideways. A phone-photographed receipt saves upside down. A landscape spreadsheet page sits in the middle of portrait text pages.

Here's the good news: rotation usually does not re-encode page images. It changes the page rotation angle, which tells the viewer how to display the page. In standard PDFs, text, images, and links are usually preserved, but check important files before relying on the output.

The selected PDF is read and rotated in your browser after the page assets load. This tool does not upload the selected PDF to an iForge Apps server.

    Rotation Quick Reference

RotationWhat It DoesWhen You Need It
90° clockwiseTurns right, top moves to the right sidePage scanned sideways (text reads bottom-to-top)
90° counter-clockwiseTurns left, top moves to the left sidePage scanned sideways (text reads top-to-bottom)
180°Flips upside downPage fed into scanner the wrong way around

What this means for you: Not sure which direction to rotate? Try 90° clockwise first, that's the most common fix. If it makes things worse, rotate twice more (or just try counter-clockwise from the original).

The 5 Most Common Rotation Problems

    Scanned documents from a feeder

Automatic document feeders (ADFs) can't always detect page orientation. If you fed pages sideways, every page in the PDF will be rotated 90°. Fix: select all pages, rotate once, done.

    Phone camera scans

Phone cameras embed rotation metadata (EXIF), but not all PDF converters read it correctly. The result is a PDF where pages appear sideways even though the original photo looked fine. A single rotation fixes it permanently.

    Mixed landscape and portrait pages

A report with portrait text and landscape tables or charts. You only need to rotate the landscape pages, select just those pages and rotate individually.

    PDFs exported from design software

Tools like InDesign or Illustrator sometimes export pages with unexpected orientation, especially when the artboard doesn't match the intended print size. Rotation corrects the display without altering the design.

Print-ready files with the wrong orientation

Some printers ignore PDF rotation metadata and print pages as-is. If your prints come out sideways, saving a newly rotated copy may make the orientation clearer for that printer.

Rotate vs Organize: What's the Difference?

Rotate PDF changes how pages are displayed, their orientation. It's a quick fix for sideways or upside-down pages. The page count and order stay the same.

Organize PDF changes which pages are in the document and their order, adding, removing, and rearranging. If you need both (fix orientation AND rearrange pages), rotate first, then organise. Working with correctly-oriented pages makes it much easier to spot what goes where.

    Batch Rotation Tips

    Tip

Select all, rotate once. If every page is sideways (common with batch scans), select all pages and rotate them together instead of fixing one at a time.

    Tip

Fix orientation before other edits. Rotate sideways pages before adding watermarks, page numbers, or annotations, otherwise those elements will appear at the wrong angle.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rotate PDF pages?
Upload your PDF, then click the rotate button on individual pages to rotate them 90° clockwise. You can also use the 'Rotate All' buttons to rotate all pages at once.
Can I rotate specific pages only?
Yes! Click the rotate icon on individual page thumbnails to rotate just that page. The rotation is shown in the preview.
    What rotation angles are supported?
You can rotate pages by 90°, 180°, or 270° (same as -90°). Each click rotates the page an additional 90° clockwise.
    Is the original PDF modified?
No, your original file is never modified. We create a new rotated PDF for download.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
The selected PDF is read and rotated in your browser after the page assets load. This tool does not upload the selected PDF to an iForge Apps server.
Can I rotate a scanned PDF?
Yes. Rotation works on any PDF regardless of whether it contains digital text, scanned images, or both.
    Does rotating affect text selectability?
No. Rotation changes the display orientation, not the content. Text remains selectable after rotation.
    Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF requires a password to open, this tool cannot rotate it. If it only has owner restrictions, remove those first using our Unlock PDF tool, then rotate the unprotected copy.
Why does my printer still print sideways?
Some printers use their own auto-rotation. After rotating in this tool, check your printer's settings to disable auto-rotate if needed.
    Can I undo a rotation?
Your original file is never modified. If the rotation isn't right, simply upload the original again and rotate differently.
    Does rotation increase file size?
Rotation usually changes page orientation metadata rather than re-encoding page images, so file size often stays close to the original. Some PDFs may change more when saved again.
Can I rotate and then add page numbers?
Yes. Rotate first, download the result, then use our PDF Page Numbers tool to add numbering to the correctly oriented pages.
