How the Image Flip Tool Works

Flipping mirrors an image across an axis. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, so a face looking to the left ends up looking to the right. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom, turning the picture upside down as if reflected in still water. You can apply either, or both at once.

This tool draws your image to an off-screen canvas, mirrors it with the browser's Canvas API, and saves the result at full resolution. Because a flip only rearranges pixels that already exist, there is no resampling and no quality loss, and your original format is preserved (a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG). Everything runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

When People Flip an Image

A mirror is a small edit that solves a surprising number of everyday problems, whether you are a parent in Manchester, a small-business owner in Toronto, a student in Sydney, or a designer in Texas:

• Reversed selfies. Many phone front cameras save a mirrored preview; a horizontal flip puts writing on a t-shirt or a whiteboard back the right way round.
• Layout and composition. Flip a portrait so the subject faces into the page rather than off the edge, a standard trick in posters, newsletters, and slide decks.
• Symmetry and patterns. Mirror an image and place the two copies side by side to build a symmetrical banner, kaleidoscope, or logo lockup.
• Iron-on and heat transfers. Fabric transfers print in reverse, so text and logos must be flipped horizontally before printing to read correctly on the garment.
• Correcting scans. A drawing or signature scanned through the back of a page comes out mirrored; one flip restores it.

Formats and Quality

You can flip any image your browser opens, including PNG, JPG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. On download, the tool keeps PNG, JPG, and WebP files in their original format; other formats are saved as PNG. Because a flip does not resample the image, the result is pixel-for-pixel as sharp as the original. For JPG output, a solid white background is painted first so the saved file never picks up an unexpected dark edge, since JPG cannot store transparency.

Privacy

All flipping is performed in your browser. No personal data or image is stored or transmitted, so the tool is safe for private photos, screenshots of confidential documents, and anything you would rather not upload to a server.
