Lorem Ipsum Generator
Generate placeholder text for your designs. Choose paragraphs, sentences, or word count.
Lorem Ipsum is standard placeholder text used by designers and developers since the 1500s.
Placeholder text is generated in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
What Is Lorem Ipsum and Why Designers Still Use It
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text that's been the printing industry's standard dummy text since the 1500s. It's based on a scrambled passage from Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC), real Latin words rearranged to create text that looks like natural language but carries no meaning.
The point isn't to be readable. It's to fill a layout without distracting from the design. When stakeholders see real English text, they start editing the copy. When they see Lorem Ipsum, they focus on layout, typography, and spacing, which is exactly what you want during the design phase.
Generate paragraphs, sentences, or words of placeholder text. It's instantly copyable and works in any design tool, CMS, or code editor. When the real content arrives, swap it out.
Placeholder Text Alternatives
| Type | Example | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Lorem Ipsum | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet... | Universal, works everywhere, nobody reads it |
| Hipster Ipsum | Artisan aesthetic tattooed... | Fun mockups, casual presentations |
| Cupcake Ipsum | Cupcake ipsum dolor sit amet... | Food-related designs, bakery sites |
| Real content draft | Actual copy, even if rough | Final design review, shows real text flow |
| Blind text (German) | Franz jagt im komplett... | German-language design work |
What this means for you: Lorem Ipsum is the most widely recognised option, with a natural-looking word length distribution that most clients will not question. Reach for the alternatives when you want humour, a thematic match, or another language.
When to Use Placeholder Text
Wireframing and prototyping
Fill content areas to test layout structure, spacing, and responsive behaviour. Lorem Ipsum shows how text blocks will flow without the distraction of actual content decisions.
Typography testing
Compare fonts at different sizes and weights with substantial text blocks. Lorem Ipsum's varied word lengths (1-12 characters) mimic natural language distribution better than repeated "test test test".
Development scaffolding
Populate database seeds, test card components, and verify text overflow handling. Use enough text to stress-test your layouts, short text always looks fine, but real content is often longer than expected.
When NOT to use it
Final design approval, clients need to see real content to approve. Accessibility testing, screen readers will read the Latin aloud. SEO pages, search engines may flag Lorem Ipsum as low-quality content.
How Much Text Do You Need?
| UI Element | Typical Length | Generate |
|---|---|---|
| Button label | 2-4 words | 1 word block |
| Card title | 4-8 words | 1 sentence |
| Card description | 15-30 words | 1-2 sentences |
| Hero section | 20-50 words | 2-3 sentences |
| Blog post preview | 40-80 words | 1 paragraph |
| Full article body | 300-2000 words | 3-15 paragraphs |
| Terms / legal page | 1000-5000 words | 10-40 paragraphs |
Always test with text that's longer than you expect the real content to be. Designs that only work with short placeholder text break the moment a client writes a 200-word product description.
Where Lorem Ipsum Comes From
The text is not random gibberish. It is scrambled Latin drawn from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a treatise on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC.
The opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is a clue to the original. Cicero's line begins "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet", which translates roughly as "there is no one who loves pain itself". The placeholder simply drops the first syllable of "dolorem", which is why "Lorem" is not a real Latin word on its own.
The passage entered design in the 1960s through Letraset dry-transfer lettering sheets, then spread worldwide in the 1980s when it shipped as the sample text in Aldus PageMaker. A Latin scholar, Richard McClintock, is credited with tracing the modern filler back to Cicero.
The Three Output Types
This generator offers three shapes of placeholder text so you can match whatever slot you are filling.
Paragraphs
Blocks of four to seven sentences each, separated by blank lines. Best for article bodies, long descriptions, and testing how a column of running text flows.
Sentences
Individual sentences joined into one block. Useful for card descriptions, intros, and captions where you want a sentence or two rather than a full paragraph.
Words
An exact word count, capitalised and ended with a full stop. Ideal for headings, button labels, and tight slots where the precise length matters.
Keep It Off Live Pages
Placeholder text is a design aid, not content. Shipping it to a live page causes two real problems: search engines may treat the page as thin or low quality, and screen readers will try to read the Latin aloud, which is meaningless to anyone relying on them.
A quick pre-launch check goes a long way. Before publishing, search your project for the word "lorem" and confirm it returns nothing across pages, meta descriptions, alt text, and ARIA labels.
- Replace every placeholder block with real copy, even a rough first draft.
- Check titles, meta descriptions, and image alt text, the easiest places to forget.
- Grep the codebase for "lorem" and "ipsum" as a final safety net before deploying.
Inserting Placeholder Text in Your Tools
Many editors can produce placeholder text without leaving the keyboard. Use those for inline snippets, and use this generator when you need a specific amount you can copy anywhere.
- VS Code and Emmet editors: type
loremand press Tab for a sentence, orlorem30for exactly thirty words. - Figma and design tools: a placeholder-text plugin fills selected text layers in one click, handy for populating a whole component set at once.
- Spreadsheets and CMS fields: generate the exact count here, then paste. For a column of rows, generate words or sentences and paste straight down the cells.
- Database seeds: copy a paragraph or two into your seed script so development records look realistic rather than reading "test test test".
Tips for Realistic Placeholder Text
- Match the real length. If your product descriptions run to 60 words, generate 60 words, not 10. Designs that only look good with short text break the moment real copy arrives.
- Vary the block sizes. Real pages mix short and long entries. Generate a few different lengths to test how cards, lists, and grids cope with uneven content.
- Push past the limit. Generate more text than you expect to need so you can see truncation, overflow, and wrapping before a user does.
- Switch to real copy for sign-off. Use placeholder text while you shape the layout, then review the final design with genuine content so stakeholders judge the real thing.
